Neck pain and headaches

The desk neck, the stiff morning, the headache that builds through the afternoon. Often one problem.

Neck pain and the headaches that travel with it are usually one problem, not two. The stiff desk neck, the morning neck that takes an hour to loosen, and the band of pressure that builds through the afternoon are the same family. At The Red Door Clinic in Mellieħa, an assessment looks at the neck, the upper back and the headache pattern together. This page covers the common causes, what an assessment involves, and the headache features that need medical care first.

Common causes of neck pain and headaches

The modern neck holds a head forward of its support for hours at a screen, and the muscles at the base of the skull and across the shoulders pay for it. Tension-type headaches, the band of pressure across the forehead and temples, usually travel with that neck tension.

We also see stiff necks after sleeping badly, necks that flare after long drives or flights, and necks that follow whiplash injuries. Cervicogenic headaches, pain produced by the neck itself, are the pattern where treating the neck treats the headache.

What an assessment involves

The assessment takes the story, screen hours, pillow, when the headache arrives, what eases it, and examines the neck and upper back movement. We are looking for the movements and positions that reproduce the headache pattern.

You leave with a working explanation and a plan: hands-on treatment where it helps, mobility and strength work, and practical advice on the screen, the pillow and the breaks that feed it.

Can massage help neck pain and headaches?

Neck and shoulder tension responds very well to massage, a back, neck and shoulder session often eases both the stiffness and the headache that rides with it. Trigger point massage, where available, is a focused option for the same pattern.

A sudden severe headache, a headache with neurological symptoms, or a new and worsening pattern needs medical assessment, not a clinic booking. Mention migraine, aura and medication when you enquire.

When to seek urgent care instead

Go to accident and emergency, or call emergency services, if you have a suspected broken bone, a joint that looks deformed, pain after a significant fall, chest pain, trouble breathing, a head injury with confusion or vomiting, numbness in the saddle area, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Sudden severe pain with swelling, or a limb that is cold, pale or blue, also needs urgent medical care rather than a clinic appointment.

If you are unsure, do not wait on a message to decide an emergency. Use emergency services first. For everything else, contact the clinic, say what happened, and we will tell you whether we can see you and what to do until then. We do not diagnose by WhatsApp.

How the clinic can help

A consultation and assessment with Andrew George, our lead physiotherapist, is €55, and follow-up physiotherapy is €45. The assessment looks at the movement that hurts and the cause behind it, and you leave with a working explanation in plain language and a plan that fits the week you actually have.

Where massage helps alongside physiotherapy, for tension, recovery and the guarded muscles around a sore area, the clinic houses qualified massage therapists in the same building. Massage and physiotherapy are not interchangeable: if pain, injury or a change in movement is the concern, start with the assessment.

Book through the contact form, by phone on 2152 4199, or by WhatsApp on 7924 1880. There is no online booking calendar; describe your symptoms and the team will help you choose the right first appointment.

Frequently asked questions

Can neck problems cause headaches?

Yes, tension-type headaches usually travel with neck and shoulder tension, and cervicogenic headaches are produced by the neck itself. If neck movements or positions relate to your headache pattern, the neck is part of the plan.

What pillow helps neck pain?

The honest answer is one that keeps your neck in a neutral position for how you sleep, and that differs between back and side sleepers. See our page on sleeping positions and mattresses for the detail, and bring your pillow question to the assessment.
