What a therapeutic back massage covers

A therapeutic back massage is not a vague rub. The therapist works systematically through the areas that carry the day: the muscles along the spine, the upper back and shoulder blades, the shoulders themselves, and the neck. Pressure is adjusted with you, and the session ends with a check on how the area feels.

What it is for is the tightness and ache that builds from sitting, driving, lifting, stress and sleep, the ordinary load of an ordinary week. What it is not for is back pain that is new, spreading, accompanied by numbness or weakness, or that has not been assessed. That is a physiotherapy question, and we will say so.

Back, neck and shoulder massage

These three areas are treated together because they are one problem in most people. A neck that aches is usually being pulled by an upper back that has rounded; shoulders that feel heavy are usually hanging off a tight neck. Working only the spot that hurts most often leaves the pull in place.

This is also why a back massage at a clinic starts with a short conversation rather than a direct lie-down. Where the ache is, where it travels to, whether headaches come with it, and whether it is worse at the desk or in the morning, those answers shape the session. A stiff neck often begins in the lower back; the therapist treats the whole chain.

Styles compared

For back work specifically, the practical choice is between three styles offered at the clinic. Deep tissue is the right choice for a long-standing, dense knot: slow, firm, focused pressure. A general back, neck and shoulder session is the right choice for the weekly ache of a working week: firm but broader. Lomi Lomi Nui covers the back within its flowing full body work, and suits people whose tension is spread rather than concentrated.

An ayurvedic back massage, warm herbal oil worked into the back, is sometimes asked about. If it is not on the diary, we will say so and point you to the nearest treatment we do offer rather than taking the booking.

Do back massage machines and massage guns work?

Honestly: partly, for some things, and less than the advertising suggests. A massage gun or a massage chair can produce a short-term feeling of looseness and can genuinely take the edge off mild, familiar tension. As a way to spend ten minutes at the end of a desk day, they are not nonsense.

What they cannot do is assess why your back is tight, work through the layers of a stubborn knot the way trained hands can, or notice that the story you are describing sounds like an injury. A machine applies the same thing regardless of what is underneath it; a therapist adapts within the first two minutes and keeps adapting.

The pattern we see is people managing symptoms with a device for months while the cause, a workstation, a hip, a training load, goes unaddressed. If a machine is helping you get through the week, that is fine. If you are reaching for it daily and the problem is not improving, that is the signal to book an assessment rather than a stronger device.

When back pain needs a physiotherapist

Book a back massage for tightness and ache that you understand: the desk-week back, the driving neck, the stress shoulders. Book a physiotherapy assessment instead if your back pain is new and unexplained, follows a lift or a fall, is spreading or worsening, travels down a leg, or comes with numbness, tingling or weakness.

Red-flag back pain, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the saddle area, fever with back pain, or pain after significant trauma, needs urgent medical care, not a clinic appointment. If you are unsure, describe your symptoms when you enquire and we will tell you honestly which appointment fits.

A consultation and assessment with Andrew, our lead physiotherapist, is €55, with follow-up physiotherapy at €45. Massage and physiotherapy are not interchangeable, but they can follow each other: the assessment finds the cause, and massage supports the weeks of recovery around it.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a back massage last?

The published full body fees are €60 for 45 minutes and €75 for one hour; a focused back, neck and shoulder session may be shorter. Confirm the length and fee when you book.

Can I book a back massage for upper back pain only?

Yes. Tell the therapist where to focus and the session leans there. Expect the surrounding areas to be worked too, an upper back problem is usually being fed by the neck and shoulders around it.

Will a massage gun replace this?

A gun can take the edge off mild tension at home. It cannot assess the cause, adapt to what it finds, or work a stubborn knot the way trained hands can. If it is getting you through the week, use it; if the problem is not improving, book a session.
